In the world of the casual American chain restaurant, brand-changing day signifies the start of something new—new menu items are rolled out, logos are redesigned, service procedures are updated, and old uniforms are traded for hipper, darker, flashier styles.

But for employees at The Grill in Youngstown, Ohio—including twenty-something server Scott Pelletier and forty-something general manager Geoffrey McCree—brand-changing day might be when everything changes. Forever.

I got the recommendation to read this from the minimalist guys.

It was a good efforts at a first book and I hope the author continues to hone his craft and that his 2nd book is better. It was worthwhile way to pass 3-6 hours at an airport layover, but I was disappointed with the lack of anything resembling any insight into human nature or any worthwhile lessons that I could take away from it. The writing was superfluous in the way it focused on what the author obviously deemed important in fleshing out the characters, but most of the words were distracting and the characters were not very interesting or developed. The ending left me very unsatisfied and I had wanted more from the characters and the author by the last page. Neither seemed to have gotten what the lesson of the story was.

BrandChanging Day edition by Shawn Mihalik Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Unique book - a quick read - the chapters moving back and forth in time to complete the picture of the plotline and characters, and the author's use of conversationally long flowing sentences that are frequently interspersed with soliloquy. Both a tragedy, and an inside view of the chain restaurant industry and a character study of the people who work in them.
Shawn Mihalik does awesome job portraying life inside the hospitality industry, but this is not just a book about waitstaff and their bosses. He has a firm grasp of human nature, the things that push people apart and draw them together. He obviously put a lot of time into crafting this work, it is worth the time to read it.
Already in love with Shawn's writing, I knew I'd enjoy every word of Brand Changing Day. I've never worked in a restaurant but find similarities with many of the less-than-exciting jobs I've had - the personalities, the inside jokes, the general sadness that comes from grouping together folks who are working a job just to work it.

Brand Changing Day blew me away - gripped by the language from the first sentence, I was saddened at the end, and wished better for so many of the folks in this chain restaurant.

Amazing writing, perfection in the story-telling, and an author I will read again and again.
This is easily the most impactful book I've read this year. As someone who has worked awful jobs for awful corporations, I was able to identify heavily with many of the characters in this novel. Reading it was a firm validation of my decision not to work in such places.
All the while the book is a cleverly humorous and satirical story that draws you into the lives of the characters, evoking a level of empathy for them that I find incredibly hard to come by in a novel. Whenever I begin a novel, this is what I'm hoping for it to be.
I read the book in two sittings because I could not bring myself to put it down.
I had no expectations when first opening "Brand-Changing Day," just a yellow book with a crooked bear and something about the restaurant industry. As the chapters passed the characters grew on me, their interactions and flaws reflecting a certain truth of human nature. They became people I knew, people I rooted for or despised (or both simultaneously), people stuck in the same monotonous crap. Written in a clear, concise, and illuminative voice, I struggled to stop reading the novel each time I opened it.
If you’re wondering whether Shawn Mihalik is a good writer, you can stop wondering now.

He’s not a good writer. He’s a GREAT writer! And you know I mean it, because I’d never use caps otherwise.

Brand-Changing Day is one of the most enjoyable, refreshing and original books I’ve read this year (that’s the same year I read To Kill a Mockingbird, mind you). Shawn manages to paint a very real and very amusing picture of life as a chain restaurant employee. The characters are all relatable, even the less likable ones, because Shawn is very observant and knows just what to show us to make us care about the people in his story.

And although the story might seem pointless at first, the order of the chapters (all leading up to the astounding events of brand-changing day) keeps the tension and curiosity at just the right level to keep the reader’s interest.
His writing style is sublime, and I warn you not to drink any beverages while reading, because sooner or later, that beverage might just shoot out of your nose in laughter, and you could, you know, ruin the book (or your , or laptop, or mobile phone).
Shawn loves to experiment with the written word, and he does it wonderfully in this book. For example, there’s one run-on sentence about melted cheese dripping from a breakfast sandwich that I read out loud to as many people as would listen to me, simply because he managed to turn something so mundane and trivial into a thing of beauty (well, beauty is relative, of course).

I highly recommend Brand-Changing Day to anyone who loves language, literary fiction, humor or has ever worked at (or dined at) a restaurant. So yeah, I mean pretty much everyone.
Shawn Mihalik does a beautiful job of telling the stories of the characters in Brand-Changing Day. Certain parts were extremely relatable (it took discovering one of the character's problems to address my own). Restaurant chains should be required to hand this book to future employees as a way to pose a simple question "Are you sure you want to do this?"
